Why did you decide to pursue the CCMP?
I was incredibly excited when the ACMP announced it would be introducing the CCMP credential! At the time it was rolled-out, I was working in a change management center of excellence as an internal change management consultant. We had developed an in-house a Management Program to certify some 400 people-leaders across the organization in leading change. I decided to pursue my CCMP because I wanted to provide confidence to the leaders in the room that I was not only experienced, but I had a globally recognized certification based on an industry leading standard.
Secondly, I knew that getting my CCMP would allow me to pursue my goal of becoming an independent consultant. I’m a big believer in on-the-job experience but I also recognize the value in having credentials to support my profession and earning my CCMP would help validate my experience.
Lastly, I am passionate the change management practice and I wanted to share my experience and connect with other change professionals. I knew that by pursing my CCMP, I would inevitably open my network and it has! I have just returned from the Orlando ACMP conference and I can say with confidence the industry is thriving.
How did you prepare for the CCMP?
I prepared by ensuring I had met all the criteria such as education, experience and training…then I began studying for my exam. I was lucky enough to prepare with three of my colleagues. We had all decided to pursue our CCMP and we wanted to be part of “the first 500”. My focus was on becoming very familiar with the standard. This is my list of tips for those taking the exam:
Get to know the standard. Read it and read it again.
Make notes! I found that adding examples to each section helpful.
Study in a group if that works for you. We prepared by asking one another questions and comparing notes.
Give yourself time to study. I gave myself about a month to study for the exam. I used evenings and weekends to prepare.
Don’t stress! ACMP has resources available to help guide your studying. Such as the Exam Prep Guide or the Flash Cards Study Tool
How has earning the CCMP benefited you personally and professionally?
Earning the CCMP has benefited me both professionally and personally. A personal goal of mine was to work for myself and become a Change Management Consultant. Earning the CCMP has given me the confidence and credibility to do this successfully.
Professionally it has opened doors. Change Management is a relatively new profession (though it’s been around for years) and it only strengthens your credibility to have the globally recognized designation. It has acted as a foundation for me, I have been able to network with confidence because I know that I have achieved the highest credential in my field.
